Partner Christopher D. Smith Teaching Appellate Advocacy at West Virginia University College of Law

Bailey Glasser partner Christopher D. Smith will teach Appellate Advocacy at the West Virginia University College of Law this autumn, returning to his alma mater to help train the next generation of lawyers.

Chris is a key member of Bailey Glasser’s appellate practice and part of its Civil Defense Practice Group.  His litigation work includes representing clients in complex commercial litigation, insurance recovery, product liability cases, and more.

Chris’s work has received national attention, including the New York Times quoting Chris regarding Bailey Glasser’s representation of the West Virginia Board of Education in litigation involving the state’s longstanding school-vaccination requirements. In 2025, he was invited to speak at the Public Health Law Conference, where he discussed legislative and judicial trends affecting vaccine policy.

Chris’s role at West Virginia University College of Law this Fall is emblematic of his longstanding commitment to West Virginia and public service. He previously served with the AmeriCorps and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Daymark, Inc., a West Virginia nonprofit that supports young people experiencing homelessness or transitioning to independent adulthood.

Chris’s work has been recognized, including by Lawdragon as a 2026 500 X - The Next Generation; as a Benchmark Litigation, 40 & Under Litigator; and a Best Lawyers' Ones to Watch in Appellate Practice, Commercial Litigation, Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions, and Product Liability Litigation.  

Chris graduated from WVU College of Law as a member of the Order of the Coif and Order of the Barristers. As a law student, he won the 2015 George C. Baker Cup, an annual appellate advocacy contest at the West Virginia University College of Law.
