Bailey Glasser Statement on Pride Month

06.26.2020

We at Bailey Glasser are proud to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community during 2020 Pride Month. In June 1969, the Stonewall Riots in New York City were a catalyst in the movement for equal rights for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Forty-six years later, on June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. And this month, fifty-one years after Stonewall, the Supreme Court issued a landmark decision finally extending the protections of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to LGBTQ employees by a 6-to-3 vote. This decision affirms that Title VII’s protections apply to gay and transgender workers, and prohibit employers from discriminating against their workers (or prospective workers) based on sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

As lawyers committed to protecting every individual’s right to equality and acceptance, we applaud this most recent important milestone. We also know that there is more to be done. This month, and always, we stand with and honor our LGBTQ+ family members, friends, co-workers, and the entire LGBTQ+ community.
