John C. Ailes

John has broad experience in all facets of natural resource regulation, and his consultation is especially critical to the firm's environmental and coal matters.

John served 32 years in the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, and worked to develop and implement the State's federally-approved mining regulation program since its inception in 1980. He also served nine years as Chief of the Office of Mining and Reclamation, DEP's mine permitting and enforcement agency.

John is experienced in legislative affairs and the intricacies of the process, and for years was the State's representative to the Interstate Mining Compact Commission.

A true patriot, John is a Vietnam-era veteran who retired from the military after more than 30 years of active and reserve service. His service included a ten-month deployment in Southwest Asia in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
